How to Use Public Transport Like a Local
Navigating a city that spans two continents can be intimidating, but in Istanbul, the journey is half the fun! Whether you are taking a historic tram through Taksim or crossing the Bosphorus by ferry, here is everything you need to know to travel like a true Istanbulite.
Istanbul kart
Although contactless credit and debit card payments have become increasingly common in Istanbul’s public transportation system, Istanbulkart remains the most popular and practical payment solution for traveling around the city. The card can be easily purchased from yellow or blue vending machines located at almost every metro, tram, bus, and ferry station. Visitors can buy the card using cash or credit card and load as much balance as they need. One Istanbulkart can also be conveniently shared among family members. Public transportation fares are approximately 1 USD per ride for a one-way trip, making Istanbulkart both an economical and convenient choice for exploring the city. Thanks to its wide acceptance and ease of use, Istanbulkart continues to be an essential travel tool for both locals and tourists visiting Istanbul.
BIG UPDATE, Use Your Credit Card (Contactless) Everywhere!
Good news for travelers! You no longer must buy an Istanbulkart if you're in a hurry. Most public transport turnstiles now support contactless credit/debit cards.
How it works: Just tap your Visa, Mastercard, or mobile wallet (Apple Pay/Google Pay) directly on the yellow card reader at Metro, Tram, or Ferry stations.
The Difference: While it's super convenient, keep in mind that using a credit card is slightly more expensive per ride than using a physical Istanbulkart. Also, credit cards do not qualify for "transfer discounts" (indirimli aktarma) between different lines.
Pro Tip: If you are only in the city for a day or two, your credit card is your best friend. If you’re staying longer and traveling a lot, getting an Istanbulkart will still save you some money in the long run.
The Best Way to Cross Continents: The Ferry
Taking a ferry between Europe and Asia in Istanbul is very easy and one of the best city experiences. First, you need an Istanbulkart or credit card , which you can buy and load credit from metro or ferry station machines. Then go to any ferry pier (like Eminönü, Karaköy, Kadıköy, Üsküdar areas), tap your card at the gate, and board the ferry. The ride usually takes about 15–30 minutes and offers beautiful views of the Bosphorus, bridges, and city skyline. It’s both an affordable transport method and a great sightseeing activity for visitors.
The Taxi Survival Guide
Taxis in Istanbul can be a dream or a nightmare.
The Meter (Taksimetre): By law, every taxi must use a meter. If a driver says "fixed price" or "the meter is broken," get out immediately. * Apps are Your Shield: Use BiTaksi or Uber. Even if you pay cash, the app records the route and the driver’s ID. This prevents the "long route" scam.
The Banknote Swap: Be careful when paying with a 200 TL note. Some dishonest drivers might quickly swap it for a 20 TL note and claim you underpaid. Always announce the value of the bill as you hand it over: "Here is two hundred lira."
In Istanbul, some transport lines are tourist attractions in themselves.
The T1 Tram (Sultanahmet Line): This is the "Sightseeing Express." It connects the Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, Eminönü, and Galata. It’s often crowded, so watch your pockets!
The Public Ferry (Şehir Hatları): Forget expensive Bosphorus cruises. A 15-20 minute ferry ride from Eminönü to Kadıköy or Beşiktaş to Üsküdar offers the best views of the Maiden’s Tower and the skyline for just a few liras.
The Tünel (F2): The world’s second-oldest subway. It’s a short, 90-second funicular ride that saves you from climbing the steep hill from Karaköy to Istiklal Street.
Marmaray :This is the deep-sea train that goes under the Bosphorus. It’s the fastest way to get from the European side (Sirkeci) to the Asian side (Üsküdar) in just 4 minutes.
